Continuing a welcome trend in the whisky world, Springbank Distillery's Hazelburn 13-year old Oloroso Cask scotch is a thrilling example of what can be achieved with the marriage of a fine single-malt whisky and an aging vessel imbued with the qualities of a fine wine (in this case, Oloroso Sherry butts). The nose is all Campbeltown, with a rush of smoke and petrol, tinged by a sweet maltiness. Dried black fruits emerge along with a note of freshly baked bread. The palate is decidedly medium weight for an Oloroso-aged whisky, with the smokey character continuing to frame the flavor profile. Char-grilled game and balsamic tartness lead finally to more black fruit features and a caramel finish. This is truly a one-of-a-kind dram that easily calls for a second pour.
