This cask is aged entirely in a Kelvin Cooperage #3 Char barrel, and bottled at an impressive 141.7pf. I was amazed when I got the news that this was Hazmat. It drinks like a fruity, viscous, maple bomb. Colorado Spirits also has a number of smoked expressions, but this cask is entirely unsmoked/unpeated and stood out as a perfect pairing to the jammier, fruit forward Westward.

2022 Private Barrel #2: Boulder Spirits Colorado Single Malt Whiskey Lost Lantern hand-selected this cask from Boulder Spirits in Colorado. The distillery was founded by Scotsman Alastair Brogan, who has brought Scottish whisky making traditions to the high peaks of the Colorado Rockies. This dry, high-elevation environment makes for bold and unique spirits. This single cask, made from 100% unpeated malted barley and aged for 5 years in a new oak cask, is a great example of what makes American single malt special.

  • ABV:  70.9% ABV
  • Age:  5 Years
  • Tasting Notes:  Bold, oaky, and charismatic, the nose on this malt is a trickster. It stood out early in tasting to me as a flavorful, rich, unbelievably complex combination of oak, sweet tea, barrel char, honey and a crazy spiced orange note. Deceptively easy drinking, the viscosity soon gave away the ABV. Reminds me of our Westland 2423 Hazmat from last year: a great, chewy texture with layers and plenty of undertones to taste through. Sweet cream, honey, cake batter, growing oakier with time. Tobacco, cracked pepper, bold and drying by the time it reaches the back of your palate with a hit of maple. A long finish, with a zip of ethanol blends nicely with bold oak, werther's caramel.
