Old Elk doesn't have an 8yr label so this gets bottled under their 6yr label. We win in that we get a way older barrel from their oldest run, at a much better price for Old Elk releases. This was a really cool barrel, held back for long time fans of the brand and aged well well beyond their standard 6yr rye offerings for stores and groups. It’s a heater, cracking the 60% mark, coming in at 123pf and just a touch shy of 8 years old. I’m glad they pulled out the forklift and dug some old barrels out for this one! It’s also a shortie, bordering on “oh god no” short but there are still a good 80 or so to go around.

  • Tasting Notes: Antlers in the front but Lawrenceburg in the back - this is token 95/5% rye with the usual suspects and tons of flavor: the nose is maple, deep tobacco, blackberry reduction, berries and a sharp pang of oak, the age pops through even on the nose. The palate is rich and filled with big rye spice, pleasant barrel char, big syrupy blackberry fruit notes and a hint of acidity and balsamic pairing neatly with maple, brown sugar, toffee, brown butter and pipe tobacco. Along finish, oaky and syrupy.
