This is an absolute monster of a whiskey on the nose and palate. This is rich, intense, and dense with a boatload of sweetness—characteristic of all of the best Stuff & Whiskey picks. Peerless is known to have some incredible barrels, and this goes toe to toe with some of the elite distillery-exclusive special releases that we've tried. Aptly named "Sweater Weather," this is a cozy and comforting pour that also delivers on that special whiskey experience we're always chasing. This barrel was the standout, runaway winner of the seven barrels we tasted while at Peerless and we all knew it once we tasted it.
Barrel No.: 171127102
Age: 8 years
Proof: 115.6 proof
State of Distillation: Kentucky
Details: Sweet Mash, Non-Chill Filtered
Nose: Sweet molasses, brown sugar, clove, sweet rickhouse oak, and the nostalgia of old leather-bound library books
Palate: All of the notes from the nose show up and show out on the palate with the addition of sweet dark cherry fruitiness on the front/mid palate that transitions into a combination of Dr Pepper and root beer on the mid/back palate before settling into a nicely-integrated sweet rye spice on the back of the palate through the finish
Experience: This is an exceptional bottle of whiskey that drinks with more flavor and finish that its proof point would suggest while simultaneously being so well-aged that there are layers of complexity, nuance, and depth present
This is very much a bourbon-drinker's rye—so much so that it could easily be confused for a bourbon in a blind tasting—and the real star of the show here is the age and how it amplifies the experience. Sip after sip, there is an incredible saturation of flavor and sweetness that explodes out of the glass, but the approachable proof point keeps it from being too much. We always say we're after single barrels that can make us forget about the Limited Edition releases we miss out on, and this barrel embodies that ethos perfectly. For us, this is a "buy it, back it up, and get a backup for the backup" bottle.
