As far as dream barrel picks go, this is very high up on the list. We knew these high-aged Frankfort barrels carried a price premium with them, so we were prepared to walk away from the barrel pick without one unless it really wowed up...and this one wowed us to say the least.
A decade and a half in the oak, hailing from Frankfort, KY, and clocking in at 130.4 proof are stats that may conjure up some parallels for hardcore bourbon nerds. It certainly conjured up some strong feelings of adoration from everyone on the barrel pick team.
The nose slaps you square in the face with heavy old bourbon-soaked oak initial, with notes of overly ripe grapes and cherries revealing themselves the more time you spend with it. There's also a foundation of distinct "old rickhouse" present, including everything from the angel's share in the air to the old dirt floors.
On the palate, the age helps tame the proof with an initially-soft approach of sweet grape and cherry followed by very old sweet oak and a kiss of vanilla bean. Then the proof comes out to play as the finish amps up into a beautiful medley of spice, spices, and a welcomed heat to balance out all of the initial sweetness.
It's not often you're able to select a 16 year old bourbon, and it very much feels like we were runnin' down a dream to have gotten a barrel this great. You see the stats on paper—not to mention the price tag—and you can't help but have high expectations. We're very happy to say that this barrel delivers.
