When you taste a magical Kelvin barrel from MGP with good age on it, it's hard to beat, and this barrel handily defeated all the other 9 year MGP barrels we tasted on this pick for the entire pick team. Unanimously selected for very good reason, this is an incredible barrel.
The nose screams of a heavily buttered Belgian waffle covered in maple syrup with the faint smell of rendered bacon fat still lingering in the air, but this breakfast dish is being served up in an old rickhouse surrounded by rows and rows of oak barrels holding delicious smelling bourbon. As you dig deeper, the dark red and purple fruit notes start to become apparent.
The richness continues on the palate, which carries over all the same flavor notes of the nose, with a focus on dense sweet oak, plums and dates, and that signature Kelvin barrel char in their very best barrels. Initial sips drink incredibly sweet and refined, coming across seemingly older than its age statement, with subsequent sips amping up the barrel spice as well as the oiliness and length of the finish.
Sweet dreams are, indeed, made of this.
